Yagashiwa Kashima-Okuri Matsuri-Bayashi

Location: Yagashiwa, Taiyu, Yokote City
Site(s) of performance: Hachiman Shrine and other places in the community
Date(s): July 24
Category: Taiko-Furyū and Matsuri-Bayashi
This is a folkloric performance art based on the worship of Kashima. After the rice planting and the first round of weeding, a yatai float (Kashima ship) goes around the community with music (hayashi) and people put their small Kashima dolls on the yatai float. After collecting all the Kashima dolls, the Kashima ship should be allowed to float away in the river, and this was done in the past. At the time of the present survey, they dismantle the Kashima ship after circulating in the community, keep the framework for the next year, and burn the decorations and Kashima dolls on the riverside.
