This is a shishimai (lion dance) of the Dai-Kagura School, for which the role of the lion is performed by two dancers. It used to be offered at the annual festival of Kurotsuchi Hachiman Shrine, after which the lion visited the entrances of individual houses. In the late 19th century, Suzuki Umegorō founded the Kurotsuchi Kagura Theater. Its kagura dance was performed to repel evil spirits and prevent the negative effects of ominous directions. The tradition is still maintained by students of Kurotsuchi Elementary School.
