At Hata Inari Shrine’s annual festival, the mikoshi (divine palanquin) is moved on the day of pre-festival to the household in charge of that year’s festival and then the first performance of shagiri is delivered in that household. After the Twelve-Number Lion Dance, Fox Dance and Rice Dance are performed. The mikoshi starts to circulate in the community and a music float and dancers follow it. Lively music of the shagiri is played during the procession of the mikoshi, but when it finally comes back to the shrine, only drum music is played with a jinku dance. Fox Dance is performed in red costume with fingers drawing a fox in the air. Rice Dance replicates the entire process of rice production.

About Furyū

Location: Hata, Nikaho City Site(s) of performance: The household in charge and other places in the community Date(s): 4th Sunday of May Category: Furyū Shagiri is a lively Shinto festival with music and dance.
