In the old days, it was held on the full moon day of September and people consumed rice cake made with early crop rice of that year. The preparation for Nej\u014d Zum\u014d starts with the preparation of the sumo ground about ten days before. On the day of the event, drums are beaten at Kumano Shrine early in the morning to remind the entire community.
