This bangaku belongs to the Honkai School of bangaku, the shugen ascetics’ bangaku which is practiced in many communities in the area around Mt. Chokai. Its origin goes back to a shugen, the priest Honkai, in the 17th century. Tōshi Bangaku has a good variety of dance numbers, mostly lion dances. It is characteristic of Tōshi Bangaku that many of those numbers are of a very old style.
